Rebecca Humes is a Liverpool born, London-based artist working across painting, drawing and publication. In 2026, she completed a BA in Fine Art, developing a practice centred on the body, gesture, and the quiet traces of lived experience.

Her work emerges through an intuitive process of accumulation, repetition, and revision. Moving between coloured pencil and oil paint, Humes explores the overlap between figuration and abstraction as a space where feeling can be held rather than described. Fragments of form surface and dissolve, allowing bodily sensations, memories, and emotional states to remain present without becoming fixed or too descriptive. Gold leaf appears sparingly throughout the work, acting as a subtle marker of significance, drawing attention to moments of tenderness, resilience, and care that persist within the complexities of lived experience.

Working through touch, mark-making, and sustained looking, her paintings and drawings attend to moments that resist language. Layers of colour, erasure, and gesture build surfaces that feel both fragile and persistent, revealing the tension between presence and absence, concealment and disclosure.

"I think of my work as a form of quiet remembering," Humes notes. "The drawings and paintings begin with sensation rather than image. I'm interested in what remains when something cannot be fully articulated, and how a gesture can carry feeling long after a moment has passed."

Through an engagement with materiality and process, Humes creates works that invite slow looking. Her practice considers how the body records experience, and how figurative abstraction can offer a space for reflection, intimacy, and emotional resonance.
